Does a psychic need tarot cards to give you a good reading?
When people think of psychic readings, the image that often comes to mind is a deck of tarot cards spread across a table. Tarot is a beautiful tool with a long history, but it’s not the only way to connect with guidance from spirit.
As a psychic medium, I don’t use tarot or any physical tools. Instead, I channel information directly — through seeing, hearing, knowing and feeling. My role is to be the medium (quite literally), the conduit, between spirit and the person sitting with me allowing information to come through that I pass on. And for connection with a spirit person, there is no other way.
Why some psychics use tarot cards
Structure and focus: Tarot can act as a framework for guiding a reading. It gives both the psychic and sitter (person having the reading) something tangible to focus on.
Symbolism and storytelling: Each card holds archetypal meaning that can open up insights and spark intuitive flow. Although not all psychics that use tarot have psychic ability and rely on the story of the tarot.
Comfort for the client: Cards can make the unseen feel more accessible — clients sometimes trust the process more when they can see something physical being worked with.
Why some psychics choose not to use tools
Direct connection: For some psychics, tools feel like a filter. They prefer to receive messages directly, without interpretation through cards.
Purity of the channel: Working without tools relies solely on the psychic’s senses — however that may be - clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing), clairsentience (feeling), claircognizance (knowing), clairgustance (tasting) and clairsalience (smelling).
Flexibility: Spirit may communicate in many ways — through images, feelings, words, or even sensations — a psychic can follow the flow without being anchored to a card spread.
My approach
I work without tarot or any other tools. The way I connect is purely through spirit. Whether that comes as a vision / picture or scene in my minds eye, a phrase I hear, songs, a sudden knowing or a strong feeling / sensation. Every reading is unique, because it unfolds exactly as spirit presents in that moment.
For me, tools aren’t necessary and I feel like tarot would get in the way of a reading. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed receiving readings the most when no tarot cards are used (yes I have had many psychic readings over the years and still do when needed).
But this doesn’t mean tarot doesn’t have value for others. What matters most is the integrity of the psychic and the resonance you feel.
What serves you best?
At the end of the day, a psychic reading isn’t about the method. It’s about the information that comes through and how it helps you on your life journey. What matters most is:
Is the guidance clear?
Is the information accurate?
Do you feel safe and comfortable?
Has the reading offered something meaningful you can take forward in your life?
Tools can be helpful, but they’re not essential for a reading. Spirit speaks in many ways. Sometimes the clearest path is simply listening.
