Demystifying psychic ability. The five psychic senses and how they work.

I am often asked how do you receive psychic information? What does it look like? How does it sound? How does it feel? How do you know? Tell me more! There are a variety of ways to receive information from spirit.

So here it is. Let me break it down.

Typically, psychics or mediums, however they name themselves, have strong psychic ability in seeing, hearing, knowing and feeling. There are also the senses of tasting and smelling, which are less common. These senses are known as ‘clairs’. Clair translates to clear. These are our tools. Our senses.

The psychic senses are:

1.        Clairvoyance = clear seeing

2.        Clairaudience = clear hearing

3.        Claircognizance = clear knowing

4.        Clairsentience = clear feeling

5.        Clairgustance = clear tasting

6.        Clairalience= clear smelling

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance is psychic vision. I would say this is my strongest clair and probably one of the strongest clairs amongst psychics (hence the name clairvoyant and people saying they are going to see a clairvoyant).

Clairvoyance is seeing physical images in your mind’s eye – symbols, people, clothes, animals, buildings, locations, objects and actions. Anything you see in the physical world is possible to see clairvoyantly.

One of the biggest misconceptions I observe is that people think you see an exact image of a person, living or passed. For me, it’s not that clear. What I see is highly pixelated over high res, meaning it can be blurry and shadow like. The image also often comes and goes in a flash. But together with my other senses, and recalling the image, I piece the information together. For example, I will hear the relationship of the person to my sitter (person having the reading) and also know this, aka my senses of clairaudience and cognizance play a part.

I used to work with my eyes closed as it was easier to focus and see with no distraction, but I found I was leaning too much on what I was seeing. I now work with my eyes open to balance what I receive through all my senses.

Clairaudience

Clairaudience is psychic hearing. It includes hearing all sorts of speech like words, names, phrases and songs. It can also include sounds such as knocking, laughter and bird noises. This is also one of my strongest clairs.

Another misconception is that the voice we hear is someone else’s. It is not! When I hear, I hear in my own voice which is internal to me.

So how do we know it’s spirit or a spirit person if the voice sounds like our own? It’s where the voice comes from. When I hear psychically it comes from behind me and to the right. It doesn’t come from my chatty mind.

Claircognizance

Claircognizance is clear knowing. This I believe is my earliest and possibly first psychic sense. The first time someone told me I had psychic ability they said I was claircognizant. I had no idea what it was and had to go and look up the meaning!

Claircognizance is your gut feeling. It’s that sixth sense, that inner knowing. You just know but can’t explain it. When I was younger, I often used to say to my Dad, “I just know.” And he would say, “How?” to which I would reply, “I don’t know, I just do.”

Clairsentience

Clairsentience is psychically feeling emotions or sensations. Often in a reading, I will feel the emotions of the sitter or someone related to them in the physical world. This might be grief, sadness, anger or anxiety that presents as feeling sick in the stomach or constriction in the chest. My throat can also close over if someone is finding it hard to speak up for themselves.

In one of my earlier readings when I was first learning and practising, I felt someone’s grief so strongly that I could hardly speak I was crying so much! Thankfully it was a remote reading for a good friend. I have since learnt that I control the intensity of the feeling by saying “thank you and enough now” to spirit when I have received and understood the meaning.

Clairgustance and clairalience

The final two clairs are to psychically taste or smell. These are less common. To psychically taste means tasting wine, bread, cake or something that relates to the sitter. It might be a memory of someone who has passed.

To psychically smell is smelling an aroma that is connected to a passed loved one for example. You might smell cigarettes and the passed over person was a smoker. Often if you are smelling an aroma that reminds you of a passed loved one, you can be pretty sure they are letting you know they are present in that moment.

Conclusion

So these are the psychic senses and how they work. It doesn’t matter if someone is working psychically aka connecting with universe and your spirit team and giving life guidance, or connecting with a passed loved one / spirit person (mediumship). The information is received and experienced in the same way.

Our tools are our senses. We need no tools other than our senses.
